Brown
6'3" (1.91 m)
Scott is lean and muscular, but not bulky looking. He is fit as someone who usually spends some time at the gym exercising, at the danger room in training sessions, at the garage working on the vehicles or building metal sculptures for those he cares about on special occasions and outside on missions with the X-Men. He has the shape of someone who is always in movement doing something and is healthy. He is also quite tall, but lithe.
When not wearing his X-Men uniform, he generally wears simple clothing such as jeans, a t-shirt and a jacket. It doesn't mean he never dresses up. He will when the occasion calls for it, though you will never see Scott wearing something he doesn't feel comfortable with.
One of his distinguishing marks are his ruby quartz sunglasses, which he always wears when not on missions or training sessions, that allows him to see and protects others from his powers as he can't control them. When on missions and danger room sessions, he'll wear a protective visor instead of the sunglasses, which allows him to focus his optic blasts and also controls their intensity and size through a dial on the side, near his right temple.
Scott doesn't have any obvious physical mutations, but his eyes are of interest. The interior of his eyelids are capable of holding his optic blasts from firing if he shuts them.
Teacher at Xavier's School
Leader of the X-Men team
Public schooling until Grade 9
High school years at Xavier's School for Gifted Youngsters
Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University
Intuitive learning from tinkering on the X-Mansion's vehicles
Power training under the tutelage of Xavier and Mystique
Tinkering on vehicles be them motorcycles, cars, trucks or the X-Jet: Scott puts them apart and then together again to perform maintenance or enhancements on them.
Metal or wood work: Scott has made with his own hands most of Nathan's wooden toys, especially during his son's early years.
Fighting for mutant rights: Scott believes wholeheartedly in Xavier's view of peaceful coexistence between mutants and normal humans and is willing to see it through.
Reading science fiction: Scott picked up this hobby from his wife Jean.
Expert hand-to-hand combatant: while living at the X-Mansion for so many years, Scott has learned several forms of martial arts. He is able to take down several trained guards with ease. He was even able to hold his own against Lady Deathstrike, but not for too long.
Expert pilot: Scott is a highly trained pilot, taking the X-Men to many battles along with Storm.
Skilled leader: Scott leads his fellow X-Men on missions and trains and teaches many students at the school.
Skilled mechanic: Scott teaches auto and shop classes at the school. He has knowledge of how to build and maintain cars, motorcycles and even the X-Jet.
Skilled marksman: Through practice, Scott has become capable at aiming his optic blasts very accurately for a variety of end results.
Optic Energy Blasts: Cyclops has the ability to release powerful energy blasts from his eyes, which are constantly firing whenever they are opened. He wears special glasses or a visor made with ruby quartz to prevent himself from accidentally causing unintentional destruction. The beams are capable of blasting through steel, concrete and wood, as well as sending targets flying backwards. He can change the intensity of the beam with a dial on his visor, making it large enough to blow open a thick steel door or small enough to break hardened slime off Jean's face without hurting her. As a teenager, Scott's beams were able to match the power of Storm's lightning blasts, even after she had her powers greatly amplified by Apocalypse.
Weakness: Scott's greatest weakness is his lack of control over his powers without external means. This happens because he suffered from brain damage in his youth, which inhibited his ability to control his optic blasts. This can be dangerous to those around him, as proven when Toad stole his visor and the pull unintentionally forced him to look up and destroy the train station's ceiling, causing extreme collateral damage.

Father: Major Christopher Summers (Corsair)
Mother: Katherine Anne Summers (deceased)
Brother: Alex Summers (Havok)
Wife: Jean Grey-Summers (Phoenix)
Son: Nathan Christopher Charles Summers (Cable)
Scott Summers was born the first son to Christopher and Katherine Anne Summers. A few years after his birth, Scott's parents had a second child, Alex. Christopher was a major in the United States Air Force and was training to be an astronaut as the boys grew up. Also a plane enthusiast, Summers owned a vintage De Havilland Mosquito. When Scott was 10 years old, in 1978, his father took the Mosquito for a flight over Alaska with his family. During the flight, the plane was attacked by a Shi'ar scout ship. Seeking to save their children, Katherine pushed Scott and Alex out of the plane with the only parachute onboard. Unknown to either boy at the time, their parents were teleported aboard the alien ship as it blew up the Mosquito and left Earth.
Scott and Alex were not as safe as their parents had hopped as their parachute soon caught fire. Although the burning chute lessened their fall, Scott still struck his head on a rock upon reaching the ground, as he was trying to save Alex from the impact, which caused brain damage that would affect him for the rest of his life. The impact also caused the harness that held Alex to Scott's chest to fail, which caused his younger brother's smaller body to roll and fall to one side of the boulder they fell on, while Scott's body fell on the opposite side.
Alex was on the side where the Mosquito's explosion had happened and its shock wave reached him while the boulder protected Scott from it. Since it was the resonant result of an interference between an alien teleportation device and an explosion, when the wave reached him it caused Alex's body to be cloned and the copy to be sent back in time twenty years to the same location where he was found by local authorities looking for poachers. The original Alex sustained no further injuries than the ones caused by his small fall from Scott's chest to the ground.
(The copy was the Havok we saw in the Fox X-Men movies. The one who died in X-Men: Apocalypse)
The destruction of the Summers' plane was witnessed by people who began a search party immediately, later finding and rescuing both brothers. Scott went into a coma as a result of his head injuries and was rushed to a hospital to undergo immediate surgery. Alaskan authorities tried to find any kin of the boys, but being unable to do so, determined Scott and Alex to be orphans. Since Alex's recovery was much faster due to his lesser injuries, he left the hospital to the orphanage much faster than Scott. For this reason, when Alex's older copy came to check on Scott, his younger original self had already left to later be adopted by a couple.
Scott's memory of what truly happened to his parents was confused due to the injuries he had sustained because of his fall and he was frequently plagued by nightmares of these lost memories in the following years. He also frequently suffered from headaches both as a consequence of the fall and of his latent mutant powers that were about to surface.
Since Alex's older copy had no stable job by then, result of having escaped Vietnam's barracks with Mystique's help not to be the subject of experiments by a young Striker and having to lay low since his return to the USA in 1972, he wasn't able to be Scott's legal guardian and he couldn't pull the older brother card because their situation was unusual. If not for Xavier's help when they first met 16 years ago, in 1962, Alex's copy wouldn't even remember that Scott would exist at this point in time as he also lost his memory due to the time displacement he had suffered.
The end result was that Scott ended up being adopted by a couple and Alex's copy was a frequent visitor after telling him he was his brother and that he was there for him no matter what happened as he had been through strange stuff too and those words made Scott less hesitant about everything that he was feeling. For five years, Scott's life went on rather uneventfully. School work and outings with his "older" brother were constants in his routine until the day everything changed.
In 1983, Scott was in school learning about the incident in Paris. During class, his eyes started to bother him causing him discomfort and a fellow student mistook this as Scott hitting on his girlfriend. Moody, he insulted the boy and asked the teacher if he could go to the bathroom. The other boy followed him ready to fight with him when his powers activated causing him to unleash an optic blast that destroyed the bathroom.
Alex came to visit Scott upon the request of his adopted parents who told him about the incident at school. He went to see Scott who was hiding away in his room with his eyes closed. Alex tried to help, but Scott said that they had nothing in common and he was done with school. This convinced Alex that Xavier could help him control his power as he had helped him 21 years ago, so "older" Alex took Scott to Xavier's School. There Scott was forced to wear a blindfold to stop his abilities from hurting others and due to this he bumped into Jean Grey causing her to drop her books, which she stopped mid-air with her telekinesis. It wasn't the best first encounter.
Scott was then guided by his brother to meet with Charles Xavier with whom they, along with Hank McCoy, went for a walk around the campus as Charles explained to Scott how the school worked. Once they were outside, Charles told Scott to use his abilities unaware of how powerful they were and the boy ended up blasting apart a tree that Charles' grandfather had planted. Scott wondered for a moment if that would cause him to be expelled, but Charles was actually proud and accepted him for enrollment.
Right after this, cloned older Alex and Scott unknowingly shared their last moment together when Alex left with Charles to see Moira. He told Scott to be good while he was gone and while waiting at the school, Scott befriended students Jean Grey, with whom he shared a mutual attraction over both having uncontrollable powers, Jubilee and Kurt Wagner, who had just been brought there by Mystique. Hank McCoy made for Scott special ruby quartz glasses that would block his powers just like the interior of his eyelids for which he was very grateful as it allowed him to see again, no matter the forever tint of red permanently on everything he saw from then on. He could see. That was improvement in itself.
Later, upon learning that Kurt didn't know American culture, Scott led the four young mutants to cut class and drove them to the mall using Xavier's car keys which he had stolen. At the mall, they went shopping for records. Jean and Scott bonded over mutual respect for singer Dazzler. Later, they tried drinks at the food court. Next, they went to an arcade. Scott and Jean played together, but ran out of quarters. Luckily, Jubilee used her ability to charge the machine and allowed them to play for free. Finally, the group saw a movie "Star Wars: Return of the Jedi" and Scott and Jubilee entered a debate about which was the best Star Wars movie.
When they returned from the mall, Cyclops discovered from Quicksilver and Beast that his "older" brother had been killed when Apocalypse invaded the X-Mansion to kidnap Xavier, Alex's powers being the cause of the place's destruction as he tried to stop the kidnapping. When William Stryker arrived soon after that, he and the military took Moira, Raven, Hank and Peter while Scott, Jean and Kurt managed to stay hidden due to Jean's telepathy shielding them from the soldiers' sights. They sneaked aboard the helicopter carrying the captured mutants which took them to the Alkali Lake base.
Arriving at the facility, Scott, Jean and Kurt ran into Logan who had already gone through the adamantium bonding process and released him. Logan proceeded to slaughter Stryker's men before escaping and Scott hoped that it would be the last time they ever saw Logan. The three then proceeded to rescue Hank, Moira, Raven and Peter when Scott blasted through the walls of their cage. Everyone escaped by taking one of Stryker's jets, but not before donning battle suits they found at the facility. They headed to Cairo in Egypt as that was the location where Xavier had told Jean in secret that Apocalypse was taking him during his worldwide telepathic broadcast.
Arriving in Cairo, Jean claimed that Apocalypse was going to transfer his consciousness into Xavier and they had to rescue him to stop the ancient one. While Mystique and Quicksilver went to try and convince Magneto to stop destroying the world by tempering with its magnetic poles, Cyclops, alongside Beast and Jean, fought off Storm and Psylocke. Nightcrawler managed to save Charles and the group attempted to escape, only to be stopped by a version of Angel and Psylocke who caused to jet to crash.
Xavier then entered a psychic battle with Apocalypse while Cyclops and Beast alongside a reformed Storm and Magneto, who had had a change of heart, battled Apocalypse's physical body. Scott used his full optic blast against Apocalypse, but could not penetrate his force field. Apocalypse used his powers to fuse Scott into a wall, but he was rescued by Beast. The opponent's overwhelming power proved to be too much for all of them until Jean, channeling the power of the Phoenix Force, joined the fight and vaporized Apocalypse's physical and psychic halves, killing him and ending with the immediate threat.
Scott and the group returned home and Jean and Magneto repaired the mansion. While standing out on the school lawn Hank approached him with a visor to replace his glasses. He had built special technology in it allowing Scott to control the intensity of his beams. He was grateful, but hoped that the kids wouldn't start to call him Cyclops, which eventually happened and he finally took it as his codename. Scott alongside Storm, Jean Grey, Nightcrawler, Beast and Quicksilver were now the new X-Men. Under the dutiful watch of Mystique and a now bald Professor X, they began their team training by fighting with replicas of sentinels in the Danger Room.
Three years after these events, at age 18, Scott successfully enrolled and started to attend courses at Cornell University eventually earning his Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering with honors from that institution in 1991. It was the first time he had been outside the X-Mansion's grounds ever since his powers had surfaced, but he dealt with it very well and with his fans too. During this time Scott became more confident in himself and his leadership abilities began to show. Upon returning to the mansion, he finally had the courage to ask Jean out and they started dating.
Begin X-Men: Dark Phoenix Spoilers
In 1992, when Scot was 24, Professor X had become an advisor to the President of the United States and the X-Men were revered as worldwide superheroes. Xavier and McCoy had witnessed the space shuttle Endeavor encountering problems in space and then Xavier was telephoned by the President to provide assistance to the astronauts. Professor X dispatched Beast, Mystique, Quicksilver, Storm, Nightcrawler, Jean Grey and Cyclops to head to space, with Hank piloting the X-Jet. Scott used his optic blasts to stabilize the shuttle as Kurt teleported himself and Peter onto the ship. They managed to rescue all astronauts, but the captain.
Charles ordered no one to be left behind and Kurt returned to the shuttle with Jean so she could hold it together while Kurt looked for and saved the last astronaut. When Nightcrawler teleported back to the X-Jet with the mission captain and was ready to go get Jean, the cosmic force they believed to be a solar flare that was endangering the Endeavor hit it full force. All believed Jean to be dead after the shuttle exploded, but then they found her body floating in space and Kurt teleported her onto the safety of the X-Jet. All, especially Scott, were overjoyed to see that somehow she was still alive.
After the astronauts were saved and brought back to Earth safely, Scott asked Jean if she was well, although she claimed to be better than ever. During a celebration bonfire party outside at the mansion grounds, Scott was hurt when Jean unleashed a telepathic wave because she could no longer control her powers. Later that night, Scott attempted to check on her, only to be rendered unconscious by Jean, who wanted to protect him from herself, after she discovered her father wasn't dead as she had believed for years.
As Jean left the X-Mansion to locate her father, Scott joined the X-Men on their trip to Red Hook to bring her home. After Jean proved to be a hostile force, Storm and Beast attempted to attack her, the latter with a firearm. While Scott knocked Ororo aside, Charles mentally froze Hank. Mystique decided not to fight Jean and instead tried to calm her down. As she approached her, Jean asked her to get away from her. Jean then lost control of her powers again and unleashed a telekinetic wave that propelled Raven back into the debris of a previously damaged house, impaling her on wooden pieces and appearently killing her as Jean flew away in shock.
Back at the X-Mansion, Scott informed Xavier that Hank had left. Using Cerebro, Charles found out that Hank had gone to see Magneto and that they were planning to kill Jean to avenge Raven's death. Scott enlisted Ororo and Kurt to join them and fought Hank, Magneto, Selene and Ariki on the streets of New York. Scott was able to save Jean from the alien Vuk, though he was eventually rendered unconscious by the U.S. military, who placed a mutant ability blocking collar on him. On the train headed to a mutant internment facility, Scott convinced Beast and Magneto that Mystique would not have wanted them to kill Jean. As the D'Bari attacked the train, Scott was freed from his restraints by the guards and fought the aliens while supporting Charles and bringing him to Jean. He witnessed the aliens' demise at the hands of Jean, who flew into space with Vuk before an explosion which seemingly killed them both.
After returning to the X-Mansion that night, Scott heard a strange noise coming from the graveyard that exists in the mansion grounds. He ran towards it and found out that Mystique's grave had been torn open. Her coffin had been broken to pieces and the body was nowhere to be seen. With tears in his eyes and feeling like he had just lost Raven again in the same day, Scott went to his room because he couldn't find the words to tell Hank or Charles about what he had just seen. They would see it the next day anyway and he might be better to think about the subject then as well. He fell asleep after many hours awaken and had a dream.
In it Jean talked to him saying she was alive and had become one with that cosmic force that had been within her, which now called itself the Phoenix due to the name the kids had given her upon her return alive from the mission in space. She also explained that it was her who unburied Raven's body because Phoenix sensed she wasn't dead yet, but dying fast due to lack of air. Mystique's body enters a cataleptic state when severely injured, which helps in its self-healing by diminishing her overall metabolism to the minimum. She had been mistaken for dead during all that turmoil, but now, with Phoenix's help, she was fully healed and decided to leave because she was already thinking about leaving the school before the mission. She had asked not to be followed. Jean asked him to respect that and said goodbye to Scott, but before cutting the telepathic link between them she let him know that all those who cared about Raven were receiving the same dream.
A few days after these events, Scott placed the new board for the school, now renamed Jean Grey's School for Gifted Youngsters, on the front gate. She wasn't dead, but they believed she was gone forever and she had "fallen" due to a mission. Hank stayed on as headmaster because Charles had taken a sabbatical leave to think about his mistakes on how he had dealt with Jean's situation. Ororo had also left to reconnect with her roots in Africa. Scott stayed as part of the team and began to teach classes at the school and help Hank in the maintenance of all the school's machines, especially the vehicles.
End X-Men: Dark Phoenix Spoilers
Three years later, Scott had another dream with Jean, but this time the message she gave him wasn't a good one. Ororo had been taken prisoner by a powerful psychic called the Shadow King in Cairo, Egypt. She said she was still too far away to help directly, but that she would help if he went to rescue their friend. The next morning, Cyclops got together a team with Quicksilver and Nightcrawler and with Beast's OK left to Cairo after Storm in the X-Jet. When they arrived, they saw her completely taken over and she attacked them. They did their best not to hurt hostile Storm as they tried to defeat her and take her back to the mansion, hoping the distance would break the psychic control Farouk had over her mind. However, the Shadow King didn't want to loose one of his best assets and entered the fight.
The three X-Men were easily taken over by the powerful psychic, but just as they were ready to do as their new master ordered of them, two other mutants arrived at the scene: Professor X and Havok. Charles had also gotten Jean's message about Ororo and had met original Alex, who is a few years younger than Scott, at Magneto's community at the island of Genosha, where he had lived since his powers manifested and he was taken there by a friend. Charles had lived in peace with his old friend at the island for the last three years as well, helping him with running the place. There life was simple and it was only beginning to get sophisticated with the technology they were slowly building for themselves until the community and the island were completely destroyed. Magneto, Professor X and Havok were among the few survivors.
Charles immediately engaged in a psychic battle with Amahl in the astral plane and Alex kept the others away from his wheelchair, so Xavier's body wouldn't be attacked. It became increasingly difficult for Farouk to battle a strong telepath such as Charles and still maintain control over the minds of the four X-Men, so he was forced to let them go. Upon regaining consciousness, Scott, Ororo and Peter looked at Kurt without recognizing him and the reciprocal was truthful as well. Nightcrawler no longer remembered having met anyone in the room as a result of being caught by a strike during the psychics' battle before his mind was released from the Shadow King's control. Frightened of being among strangers and not remembering how he got there, Kurt teleported away to parts unknown until five years later.
Suddenly, there was a burst of light coming through the windows and soon after Jean, with that same cracked facial skin and fiery eyes as she had before she vanished, walked into the room and joined Charles in the astral plane. Soon, they defeated Farouk and Phoenix decided that it was best to leave his mind stranded in the astral plane forever, so it cut the connection between Amahl's mind and body, but not the strand that would have killed him as it had done with En Sabah Nur years before. The Shadow King's body entered a deep coma state and his mind from then on wandered the astral plane.
After the battle was done, all were happy that Jean had returned. Though Charles was fast to say that he knew for a fact Jean wouldn't have agreed to do what Phoenix had just done. Phoenix then confessed that Jean had gone quiet after it had denied her to return to Earth to help her friend Ororo. Their joining made them both stronger, but with Jean unwilling like that it wasn't beneficial to either of them anymore. Jean's eyes turned green again and the fiery cracks on her face subsided as a flame of fire appeared all around her body. The sentient fire laid her down on the floor and went upwards, leaving its host. As Jean and Phoenix became two separate entities again, the cosmic force took the form of a fiery bird and spoke in their minds that the time had come for it to return to the depths of space alone. Then, it flapped its fiery wings, burned its way through the ceiling and flew up until it disappeared in a flash of light out of the atmosphere.
Scott ran towards Jean as she opened her eyes and embraced her, welcoming her back home. Then, his attention went to Charles and the mutant he had brought with him, who looked exactly like a younger version of his older brother Alex. Original Havok said with conviction that he was Alex Summers and Havok was a cool code name he might use later. Charles explained to both Summers brothers their situation and what had happened to Alex when the accident that supposedly killed both their parents happened. Original Alex decided to return with the others to the X-Mansion to find out more about his older brother and in time they became friends.
Upon their arrival at the mansion, all residents were happy to see Charles, Ororo and Jean back with them again. The school then returned to its original name and Scott was overjoyed to hang the original board at the front gate. Life went on, Scott continued to teach his classes and help Hank maintain the machines and eventually him and Jean became close again. A couple years later, they decided to start a more serious relationship and she moved with him to his room.
In 2000, Scott and Ororo were sent to rescue Logan and Rogue from Sabretooth, who had been sent by Magneto. Scott disabled Sabretooth by setting his visor to shoot a powerful optic blast that made the feral mutant fly backwards. He then used his beams in a lower setting to release Rogue from the seatbelt, as she had become trapped inside Wolverine's caravan. He and Ororo grabbed Rogue and Wolverine ran away seconds before the truck exploded. They later brought the latter pair back to Xavier's school.
After Logan escaped from the infirmary and entered a class Professor X was teaching, his rescuers also entered. Xavier introduced them and Scott offered his hand for a handshake with Logan, but he didn't respond. He didn't recognize Logan from their previous encounter at Alkali Lake seventeen years ago because he now looked and acted more like a person and less like a savage animal on a rampage. Xavier told Wolverine that they had saved his life and just then Jean entered the room. Xavier introduced her as well and then told Logan that he was in his school for Gifted Youngsters, for mutants, and that he was safe there from Magneto. Xavier then told him that he could help him figure out who he was, later showing him that his telepathy could help Logan remember his past.
After Jean ran some tests on Wolverine, she explained to Charles, Scott and Ororo her findings about him: a supposedly indestructible metal called Adamantium had been fused to his entire skeleton. Ororo then asked how he was able to survive a procedure like that and Jean explained that his mutation was a healing factor, which also made his age impossible to determine. Xavier asked who did this to him and she said that he didn't know nor did he remember anything that had happened before it.
Some time later, after Wolverine accidentally stabbed Rogue through the chest and called out for help, she used her powers to absorb his healing factor. Ororo, Jean, Scott and a few kids entered the room just in time to see Rogue's wounds heal and Logan pass out. Jean and Scott rushed to help Logan and Rogue started apologizing and saying it was an accident. The next morning in the underground part of the mansion, Xavier and Scott were trying to figure out what Magneto wanted with Logan. Just then, Logan and Ororo walked in and Wolverine asked where Rogue was. Xavier, after a fast mind scan, said that she was gone. A few minutes later, Charles, Scott, Jean, Ororo and Logan entered a secured room and Xavier welcomed Logan to Cerebro which was a big round room with a bridge leading to the machine. Xavier explained that it amplified his powers, allowing him to track mutants through large distances and that was how he intended to find Rogue.
Inside, Xavier managed to locate Rogue at the train station after a fast search. Logan started to leave to find her, but Charles stopped him saying that if he left the mansion Magneto would capture him. Instead, he sent Scott and Ororo to find her. In the garage, they were preparing themselves to leave when Scott noticed that his motorcycle was missing. Storm and Cyclops arrived at the train station and she went to check with the ticket agent as Scott looked around. Ororo gave the ticket agent a description of Rogue, but before he could tell her if he had seen her Sabretooth showed up scaring everyone, grabbed her throat, lifted her and growled. Scott rushed to help her, but Toad, who was clinging to the wall, sent out his long tongue and removed his visor making him shoot a powerful optic blast at the ceiling, accidentally breaking a hole through it. Everybody ran hysterically as Scott shut his eyes and Ororo almost lost consciousness.
Back at the mansion, after Senator Kelly had arrived and Professor X read his mind about the machine Magneto had built, Charles, Scott, Jean and Logan were in a room upstairs. Xavier explained to them that Magneto used a machine that produces radiation that triggers mutation in ordinary human beings. Jean continued saying that the mutation was unnatural and Kelly's body was rejecting it as his cells were breaking down. Scott asked what the radiation would do to mutants and Xavier answered that nothing, but it could seriously harm humans. Logan asked what Magneto wanted with Rogue and Xavier answered that he didn't know.
Annoyed, Logan turned to leave again, but then Scott found the answer. He deduced that Magneto wanted Rogue to absorb his power so she could power the machine in his place, allowing him to live. Ororo then entered Xavier's study to inform them that Senator Kelly was dead. Charles told them that he would go find Rogue and became poisoned when using Cerebro due to Mystique having tampered with it. Jean checked what was wrong with Cerebro and removed the green liquid. Charles being in an unconscious state greatly affected Scott who saw him like a father. In the lab, he told the unconscious professor how much he appreciated all that Xavier had done for him and that if anything happened, he would take care of the school.
In Cerebro, Jean decided to try and use it herself for the first time. Scott left the lab and saw her with the helmet on her head. Knowing how dangerous it was to her, he ran towards Cerebro, but the door closed before he got in. Inside, the mental pressure made Jean collapse and the door opened, allowing Scott to enter. She told him that she knew where Magneto was going. Later, Scott, Jean, Ororo and Logan discussed their battle plans. They understood Magneto's plan and knew he wasn't aware of the fact that his machine could kill. They planned to land on Liberty Island and spoil his plans.
After the landing, the X-Men got out of the jet. As they passed through the metal detector, it beeped on Logan, but he popped his claws in it. They started to walk carefully in the hall, but Toad and Mystique were already waiting for them, hidden. Logan's senses picked them up and he told the others that there was someone there, but he didn't know where and told them to keep their eyes open. Out of nowhere, another Wolverine showed up and started battling Logan. Toad hopped on Scott, Ororo and Jean and threw all of them to the floor. With his deadly speed, strong legs and long tongue, he succeeded to knock back Scott and Ororo as they weren't ready, causing Scott to get trapped behind a steel door. Toad incapacitated Jean by spitting fast-hardening slime over her mouth and nose, preventing her from breathing or calling for help.
Using his optic blasts, Scott blasted his way through the barrier Toad locked him behind. He then found Jean frantically trying to peal the hardened slime from her face. Scott rushed to her and calmed her down. Setting his visor on low, he blasted the slime off her face before she suffocated. Storm showed up upstairs and they followed her up. They saw the torch and suddenly Logan told them all to get out of there. Scott asked what the problem was and he said that he couldn't move. He floated in the air and got pinned to the wall. Metal pieces flew and hooked the others to the walls too despite Scott's attempts to blast them. Cyclops was hooked in a way that his visor was directed at Jean's head, preventing him from shooting.
Magneto floated down and aimed Logan's hands to his chest, preventing him from popping his claws. Sabretooth joined them and removed Scott's visor, forcing him to close his eyes. Magneto explained his motives to the X-Men. Wolverine told him that if he were really so righteous it would have been him in the machine. Magneto just flew up to the machine as Rogue screamed for help. After Wolverine broke free and engaged Sabretooth, he fell down and sticked his claws to the wall to hang on it, almost killing Scott and Jean who were at the other side of the wall. Sabretooth thought he was dead and walked to Ororo, only for Logan to jump back in with Cyclops' visor. The torch smashed and the machine started working. Jean telekinetically placed the visor on Scott's eyes and told him to shoot, which he did blasting Sabretooth through the wall.
Magneto watched Sabretooth crashing on the boat as Logan released the others. He asked Scott if he could blast the machine, but he said that doing so would kill Rogue. Scott then asked Ororo if she could lift him up, but she said she couldn't control it. Logan told her to fly him instead because if he didn't make it, at least Scott could still blast it. Cyclops agreed and asked Jean to try to steady Logan with her telekinesis. With their combined efforts, the two women managed to direct Logan to the top of the machine. The energy field started to spread and Wolverine jumped inside. He tried to slash Rogue's chains, but Magneto stopped him with his magnetic powers. Cyclops saw a chance and decided to take it, managing to blast Magneto and allowing Wolverine to destroy the machine and save everyone in New York.
A month later in a museum in New York, the students of Xavier's school were on a field trip. Suddenly, Jean started hearing many voices in her head which were the random thoughts of the people around her. It got louder and louder until Scott noticed through their link and asked if she was OK. She then said that her telepathy had been off lately and she couldn't seem to focus, just hearing everything. Scott said that it wasn't just her telepathy, a month earlier she had to concentrate just to levitate a book or a chair across the room and now when she had a nightmare their entire bedroom shook. She told him that her dreams were getting worse like when she was younger. She kept feeling something terrible was about to happen. Ororo then approached them and asked if they had seen Bobby or Rogue. Jean scanned and said that something was happening at the food court. The three joined the rest at the food court as Professor X froze everybody at the museum. A news report on television told about the mutant attack on the White House and Scott said that they should leave. Charles agreed and everybody started moving again once the students and the X-Men were gone.
Later in Xavier's study at the school, the X-Men were discussing the attack on the White House. Scott thought Magneto was behind it, but Jean and Charles disagreed thinking he wouldn't be able to organize something like this from prison, not to mention it would only hurt his goals. Ororo said the government would probably react by reintroducing the Mutant Registration Act, but Xavier feared it could be much worse. They could declare a state of emergency, placing every mutant in the country under arrest. Jean then raised the question of the attacker and Charles said they had to get to him before the authorities. He had been trying to track him using Cerebro, but his movements were too erratic. He told them that when he had the exact location of this mutant, he wanted Jean and Ororo to pick him up.
Later, Scott accompanied Xavier to Magneto's plastic prison as Charles wanted to question him on the White House attack. While waiting for Xavier, Lady Deathstrike entered the plastic hall where he was in and fired at him with a plastic gun. Scott shot an optic blast at her and then beat the two guards. He ran to blast the door to the cell and free Charles, but Yuriko got back up and leapt at him with her metallic-sounding body, knocking him out. She took both Scott and Xavier to William Stryker's facility at Alkali Lake.
After brainwashing him, Stryker had Scott wait for the X-Men. He found Magneto, Mystique and Jean and, under mind control, prepared to shoot at Magneto and Mystique. Jean used her telekinesis to shove them out of the way in the last second and yelled to them to go because she would take care of Scott. She used a telekinetic blast to throw him away to a lower level and redirected one of his optic blasts. Jean was still looking for Scott who was hiding not far from her and prepared to shoot. He fired a powerful optic blast at her, but Jean channelled the Phoenix Force from afar and her eyes glowed fiery. She sent the blast away at the wall telekinetically, cracking and breaking pieces of the dam.
Scott, whose mind control wore off when Jean sent his blast back at him, walked over to her, who was lying on the floor, and hugged and kissed her. He apologized and said that he saw her, but couldn't stop himself and that he loved her. Her leg was injured and then she sensed telepathically that something was wrong and that they were too late as they both screamed and fell to their knees as the effects of Dark Cerebro were kicking in. Magneto finally succeeded to open the doors and the machine stopped working.
Storm, Nightcrawler and the kids got to Dark Cerebro's doors and Jean and Scott got there right after them. Jean scanned the inner room telepathically and said that Charles was still in there with another mutant. He was trapped in some sort of illusion. Suddenly, she realized what Magneto had done and said that he had reversed Dark Cerebro. It wasn't targeting mutants anymore, it was targeting everyone else. Scott prepared to blast the doors, but Jean said that Charles was connected to Cerebro and opening the doors could kill him and everyone his mind was connected to. Storm told Kurt that she needed him to take her inside. Nightcrawler told Storm that if he couldn't see where he was going it could be dangerous and she said she had faith in him. Jean warned them to not believe in anything they saw in there. Kurt hugged Ororo and started praying. They disappeared in a purple cloud of smoke and reappeared inside Dark Cerebro.
After Nightcrawler and Storm eventually succeeded in rescuing Xavier, all the mutants ran through the halls to the spillway believing it to be their only escape. They got to the doors, but Logan popped out of a tunnel and popped his claws in a fuse box, closing the door before they would get caught in the flood. Logan then led them through the other way out. The mutants rushed out to the snow. To their horror, the helicopter was already gone, taken by Magneto. Suddenly, the jet showed up spinning uncontrollably in the air. Rogue was piloting and made an emergency landing, crashing in the snow.
In the jet, Xavier told Scott that they had to get to Washington as he feared this had gone beyond their league. Scott and Ororo panicked when they realized that something was wrong and they couldn't take off. The jet lost power and just then the water bursted out through the dam. Jean, at the back, realized she had to do something. After a few seconds, Xavier noticed that she had left and called her name, alarming Scott. Xavier said she was outside and Scott rushed to the exit. Jean telekinetically closed the door, keeping him inside, and activated the jet. Scott yelled at Ororo not to take off, but Jean did it for her.
Jean used one hand to keep the water from drowning the jet and the other to free the jet's leg from the snow. Scott watched in misery and Logan ordered Kurt to get her, but Kurt said she wasn't letting him. As her last words of goodbye, Jean used her telepathy to speak through Xavier's mouth, saying she knew what she was doing and that it was the only way. Scott begged her not to do this and she said goodbye. Her body and eyes glowed a fiery spark as she managed to release the jet's leg and lifted it in the air. She released her telekinetic grip, letting the water to drown her freely. The jet was flying above what was then a large sea while Kurt prayed.
A deeply saddened and angry Scott joined Charles, Ororo, Bobby, Rogue, Kurt and Logan as they broke into the White House to talk with the President and prevent a war between mutants and humans. Xavier froze everyone in President McKenna's office for the X-Men to infiltrate it. The sky turned dark and lightening struck as the President saw the mutants standing in from of him. The lightning outside was the only thing to light their faces. The President was scared to see his attacker, Kurt, among them. Charles greeted the President good morning and calmed him down by saying they wouldn't harm anyone. He asked who they were and Xavier answered that they were mutants and his name was Charles Xavier. Rogue put some documents down on the President's desk and Charles explained that they were taken from the private office of William Stryker.
The President asked how they got it and Xavier answered that he knew a little girl who could walk through walls. The President said that he had never seen that information and that he didn't respond well to threats and Charles said that it was not a threat, but an opportunity. There were forces in this world, he said, both human and mutant alike, who believed that a war was coming. As he could see from the files, some had already tried to start one and there had been casualties, losses on both sides. Charles ended by telling the President that what he was about to tell the world was true: this was a moment to either repeat the mistakes of the past or to work for a better future. Logan said that they would be watching as lightning brightened all their faces and suddenly they disappeared. All the lights turned on again. The President was silent, not sure what to tell to the cameras.
In Xavier's study, Scott was looking out the window as he asked if they could have done more to save Jean and Charles said that in the past she might have let them. Students walked into the room and Scott left, not finding that much comfort in his mentor's words. Days after Jean's death, Scott had fallen into a deep depression, neglecting his duties as a teacher and as a X-Man. Memories of her recent death at Alkali Lake tortured his mind. He whispered her name and heard her respond within his mind through their psychic link, which somehow was still working.
Scott immediately left the mansion towards Alkali Lake without telling anyone. On a road in Canada, he was riding his motorcycle. Suddenly, he stopped it and got off it, again hearing Jean's voice whispering his name inside his mind. Tortured by his grief, he walked to the edge of a small cliff over the water. Her voice got louder and louder and Scott, thinking his mind was playing tricks on him, yelled at the voice to stop. It didn't stop, but kept getting louder, like screams in his head. Scott broke down and screamed at the voice to stop with all his might and then shot a powerful optic blast at the water. Calming down a bit, he stopped the blast by closing his eyes, dropped to his knees and put his ruby quartz sunglasses back on. He slowly got back up, Jean's voice was kinder now as if guiding him somewhere. He followed it and found her body by the water over some rocks. He checked her vital signs and she was still alive, but unconscious.
As his fingers left her neck, Jean slowly woke up and her hand grabbed his. Scott hugged Jean and asked her how she had survived and she said that she didn't know. The last thing she remembered was being covered by the water and trying to protect herself with a telekinetic shield that began to fail under the pressure as she couldn't concentrate enough because she was worried about their safety. The last thing she remembered was a calm voice inside her mind saying that they were safe and she would be fine. Scott then took Jean back to the mansion and everyone was overjoyed to see her alive again.
Later that year, Peter Maximoff received news that his twin sister Wanda had gotten worse at the psychiatrical hospital she had spent good part of her teenage and adult years. Quicksilver immediately went after her and found his sister in a state of despair. Their mother Marya had died a few years ago and the only family they had left was Anya Maximoff, who had been taken in by their parents as extended family when they were newborns. Peter decided to leave with Wanda towards Transia, his birth country, in the hope that Anya could somehow help Wanda and neither twin ever came back to the mansion.
One year after, in 2001, talks of the Mutant Registration Act returned to the political agenda due to some of Magneto's terrorist attacks while leading the new Hellfire Club as its White King. Since his plans to turn the world's leaders into mutants in New York had failed, he was now looking for retribution for the destruction of Genosha and trying to force the world to grant the island back to mutants and leave them there alone that time around. Those events caused a reaction from Nick Fury, then director of S.H.I.E.L.D. He knew no one would grant Genosha or any other piece of land to be a mutant only country due to fear of mutant organization, so he came to the mansion with an idea for a solution and asked Charles for a favor.
At first, Xavier refused Fury's idea.
